Suns defeat Sharks in fluctuating match
In a Fairtree SuperSeries match with fluctuating odds, the Southern Suns left the Western Sharks trailing behind. The Sharks' start was promising, but the finish was mediocre. For the victorious Suns, it was exactly the opposite. There were two centurions: Georgia Atkinson and Phebe Molkenboer.
The Western Sharks, led by Babette de Leede, chose to bat after winning the toss. The captain (41) herself, together with her opening partner Georgia Atkinson (a beautiful and powerful 100), put down a strong and smooth opening: 84/1 in fourteen overs.
Atkinson and Carlijn van Koolwijk (32) brought the score to 172/2. However, the Sharks subsequently lost eight wickets for 71 runs and, after the good start, were all out for 243. This turnaround was mainly brought about by Phebe Molkenboer (4-47) and Erin Hunt (3-23). After number three, no one reached double figures again.
Suns innings
With 35/2 (Myrthe van den Raad (2-40)), the Southern Suns had anything but a dream start. But after that, Phebe Molkenboer (110 not out) and Robine Rijke (91 not out) built a massive unbeaten partnership of 209 runs for the third wicket. Neither international player went out and thus secured the impressive win for the Suns without further wicket loss.
The Fairtree SuperSeries offers a standard between the Inspire women's competitions (20 and 40 overs) and the national team and has once again proven its great value this year.
