- Dutch women miss out on unique opportunity against Thailand
The Dutch women have missed a unique opportunity to rise in the T20 world rankings. The team was unable to chase 86 Thai runs and was all out for 69.
Eva Lynch cleaned Boochatham with a classic offspinner. Despite some misfields and a dropped catching opportunity, the Netherlands was on top in the early stages.
It was important to get the dangerous Khoncharoenkai - who had already made two half centuries. Iris Zwilling did the job in the fifth over (14/2).
Suwanchonrathi was caught at mid-off by Caroline de Lange (21/3), followed by an important catch at point by Frédérique Overdijk (24/4, the experienced captain Chaiwai). After ten overs, Thailand was on a seemingly hopeless 31/4.
Thailand was unable to accelerate. In the fourteenth over, only the third boundary was struck. A fantastic fielding action by Isabel van der Woning on the boundary resulted in a run out (56/6).
On the Thai side, Chanida Sutthiruang (27) provided a bright spot. Furthermore, it were - partly thanks to two catches by Eva Lynch - the Dutch who excelled. All bowlers bowled well; the best numbers were for Silver Siegers (2-9) and Eva Lynch (2-13). Thailand 86 all out.
Netherlands innings
The Dutch didn't exactly have a dream start (21/4). Robine Rijke hit the ball, but was - perhaps crucially - given LBW.
Babette de Leede (25) and Iris Zwilling seemed to bring Orange into calmer waters, but it suddenly became 55/7, including a third first ball duck.
Some much-needed 'rearguard action' (Zwilling 13) was insufficient to still give the Dutch the victory.
“We played the best cricket so far in the first innings, but had an off-day batting”, national coach Neil MacRae summarised it after the game.
