- Edwards’ wonderful captain's knock is foundation for T20I win over Oman
With a fantastic career-best 99, captain Scott Edwards laid the foundation for the first T20I win over Oman on Thursday. The Omanis' answer fell short thanks to strong Dutch bowling.
Shariz Ahmad, Kyle Klein and Viv Kingma came into the team ahead of Vikram Singh, Aryan Dutt and Paul van Meekeren.
Again, the Netherlands was asked to bat first and just like the day before, the Netherlands didn't get off to a great start. After 5/2, the score became a bit more bearable with 44/3 (O'Dowd 23), but the real fireworks followed for the sixth wicket when Noah Croes (28 not out) acted as a valuable support act for the Dutch captain. In six overs and two balls, the batters added 76 runs. On the last ball, Edwards was able to complete his first T20I century, but he was caught by Sufyan Mehmood on his own bowling. He had used only 55 balls for his 99 (7x4, 5x6); 185/6 was the excellent end result.
Oman innings
Thanks to Timm van der Gugten, who took two wickets in his first over, Oman also got off to a bad start (8/2). But here too there was a recovery for the third wicket: Kaleem (36) and Mirza (23) brought the score to 60/3.
When Colin Ackermann accounted for both batsmen and Roelof van der Merwe was also successfully involved in the attack, it was 73/6 in the eleventh over. Where captain Edwards was unlucky with his bowling changes earlier on this tour - in the series of ODIs for the WCL2 - they now generally worked out well. With seven wickets down, Oman had to make 90 runs from the last twenty balls. Shariz (1-25) was attacked in the eighteenth over, but Oman's rearguard action (52 for the eighth wicket) was insufficient to keep the Dutch from winning, especially due to Ackermann (3-15), Van der Gugten (2-29) and Van der Merwe (1-11). Edwards and De Leede took two catches each. Oman finished on 135/7.
