- Head-to-head battles expected in Dutch Womens’s Super League 2023
This summer the Dutch women will play head-to-head matches in the so-called 'Super League'. Players of the national team, former international players, talented club cricketers and young prospects will be divided into three teams which will have around 17 players per squad. The three teams will play T10 and T20 games against each other.
The teams have been given illustrious names: Northern Panthers, Southern Suns and Western Sharks. Heather Siegers will lead and coach the Northern Panthers. She will be assisted by Abel Heymeijer. Babette de Leede will captain the Southern Suns. Fazil Mahmoud will coach this team.
Iris Zwilling will captain the Western Sharks whilst Taku Kusano will take up the coaching responsibilities for this team.
“We’ll be playing T10 and T20 cricket because attacking batting and power hitting are two areas where Dutch women’s cricket can improve”, says national women’s coach Shane Deitz. “This way we can focus on those particular skill sets.”
“The KNCB is excited to announce the launch of the Dutch Women’s Super League”, says Performance & Operations Manager Subir Shrestha. “This is a stepping stone to KNCB’s ambition to further develop women’s cricket in the Netherlands. The best players will compete in a three-team tournament. Hopefully with regular competitive cricket we can bridge the gap between club cricket and international cricket. Furthermore, the fixtures are planned not just at the clubs that already have women’s cricket but also at those clubs that have the ambition to grow the profile of women’s cricket and further increase female participation in their region.”
