- Kampong men to Topklasse after win against Quick
At Quick vs Kampong on the De Savornin Lohmanlaan in The Hague, promotion to the Topklasse was at stake. After Kampong's 374 runs, Quick seemed to have no chance. However, the team from The Hague picked up the gauntlet and went down fighting with 322 all out.
Quick sent in Kampong and probably thought it was in the game at 53/2 with Max O'Dowd out. However, a ball on the helmet of Rata Alphonse and a temporary retired hurt brought the couple Scott Edwards and Vikram Chaturvedi to the astroturf in The Hague. The next wicket fell on 277 after a dazzling batting show, with centuries for both batsmen.
After Chaturvedi was dismissed Edwards continued until 159, with nineteen fours and four sixes. The counter didn't stop until 374/6.
Nathan Crudeli – dropped on the first ball – and Daan Vierling raced to 70/0 in seven overs, helped by poor bowling from the Utrecht team. When it was 100/0 after 11.3 overs, Quick could hope for an upset. The partnership was broken when Pierre Jacod got Daan Vierling (32) LBW (129/1). Crudeli reached his 100 off 77 balls and as long as he was on the pitch, Quick could dream of a comeback at the highest national level.
Even when Crudeli (133) and Geert Maarten Mol (24) were gone, Quick was anything but without a chance thanks to a half-century in 29 balls by Lesley Stokkers. 92 runs from twelve overs were called for and 65 from the last nine, but when Stokkers (57) was given run out (in fact it was a stumping, by the way, as he did not attempt to run), the tail was unable to get the job done (Quick 322 all out).
In 2025, Kampong will be back at the highest Dutch level, possibly with internationals Scott Edwards and Max O'Dowd in the ranks.
