- Netherlands women fixtures against Namibia, Ireland and FairBreak this summer
In this 'Summer of Cricket', it's not just the Dutch men who have a spectacular program of matches. The women's team also has something to look forward to this summer. Both Namibia (five T20I’s played at Hermes DVS and VCC) and Ireland (three ODI's at VRA and VCC) will visit the Netherlands.
The Dutch women have shown good progress over the last few years, including a first-ever T20I win over Ireland in the summer of 2020 and competitive games against Scotland and Sri Lanka.
Their progress did not go unnoticed. In May 2022 the Netherlands were awarded their ‘One Day International status’ by the ICC. As a result, all players will make their official ODI debut in August, when Ireland will visit the Netherlands for three One Day Internationals.
T20s against Namibia in June and July
Namibia will visit the Netherlands in June and early July 2022 for five T20Is. Both countries have met before: in September 2019 in Arbroath, Scotland. Iris Zwilling (3 for 11) and Heather Siegers (3 for 27) restricted Namibia to 91-8. Thanks to Sterre Kalis (34) and again Heather Siegers (21), the Dutch women got the required runs in the eighteenth over.
ODIs against Ireland in August
At the end of August, Ireland will visit the Netherlands for three One Day Internationals. Ireland and the Netherlands met several times in their long cricket history. The last three matches with ODI status date back to 2006; one was rained off and the other two were won by Ireland.
FairBreak visit in August/September
Finally, in August and September, a Fairbreak team will visit the Netherlands for three T20’s at VRA - Amstelveen. FairBreak is an organisation, founded by Australian Shaun Martyn, that fights for equal rights for men and women. The organisation caused a stir by organising a tournament in Dubai in May 2022 in which women from 35 different countries participated. Two Dutch cricketers played in this tournament as well: Sterre Kalis and Babette de Leede.
National women’s coach Shane Deitz commented: “We have a fantastic summer of cricket ahead for the team with great opportunities in T20 and 50 over cricket all at home in front of our home supporters. The girls have worked really hard over the winter and early in the summer and are ready for the international summer ahead.”
“Building on from a great tour in Zimbabwe at the end of 2021 where the team showed that we can be competitive against higher ranked teams we have a chance again to take on some quality opposition on our home grounds.”
“Namibia - currently ranked higher than us - will be a great challenge and one we are excited about. They are a well-prepared side and played a lot of international cricket of late so this will be a tough series.”
“Later we get to play Ireland whom we have played many times over the past 12 months. They have had the better of the results, but we have pushed them hard and want to try and be on the right end of the results this time.”
“Lastly, playing the Fairbreak organisation is fantastic. FairBreak has given great opportunities for Associate countries’ players in the women’s game to show their skills against the world’s best. Shaun Martyn and his team have been inspirational to women cricketers around the world, and it will be an honour to play them in a three-game series which will bring women from all parts of the world together. On the field again it’s a great chance for the team to showcase their skills in front of our home supporters.”
