- New spirit Dutch national men’s squads
The KNCB’s coach and selector, Ryan Campbell, announced the men’s national XI summer squad as well as an ‘Elite player pathway squad’ for 2019.
The national XI squad will once again be led by VOC’s Pieter Seelaar (picture)and he will be supported by veteran Roelof van der Merwe (Somerset) and VOC wicketkeeper Scott Edwards in a newly formed Leadership group. “We felt Pieter needed some support and we think Roelof and Scott represent a perfect mix of the now and the future of Dutch Cricket,“ Campbell explained.
The squad features a number of new faces with HCC-batsman Tonny Staal being added after a season in Perth. He will be joined by Hermes DVS-speedster Sebastiaan Braat and VCC-duo Clayton Floyd and Brandon Glover. “We have tried to extend our depth of talent over the past two years and this squad reflects that. It is an exciting time for Dutch cricket and the players know it, they all feel that opportunity awaits.”
Captain Pieter Seelaar was excited about the look of the squad and had this to say: “The summer squad is an ideal mix of experienced players, guys who have been part of the squad and some exciting raw talent. It’s a squad that has the quality and depth to be successful not only for the upcoming World T20 Qualifiers, but also for the years beyond. This season provides us quality fixtures. There will be enough games for players to showcase their abilities and put their case forward for selection for the World T20 qualifiers. Not only will we be focusing on T20 format, but with the ODI Super League in mind, we’ll also be playing ODI’s against Zimbabwe.”
Also named today was a nine man Elite Player Pathway Squad that will train alongside the main national group. The aim of this squad is to fast track the best of Dutch talent as well as act as a stepping-stone between club cricket/national U18’s and the national squad. “As an organization we have a responsibility to identify young talent and get them into our elite programs so they can train alongside our best players and be exposed to our coaching staff & systems so that they understand the way we do things and what it takes to be successful at international level, our future depends on it”, said coach Campbell.
