- One Day status of Dutch women's cricket team confirmed
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the One Day International status for the Dutch women's team. This means that qualification for the world championship in 2025 is now possible.
At the end of 2021, the Netherlands played a World Cup qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe. This tournament was prematurely aborted due to the outbreak of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus. As a result, teams with the highest ODI ranking, as per a predetermined date before the tournament, were allowed direct entry into the World Cup.
Countries such as Thailand, Scotland, and the Netherlands, who had made great strides in their development, had no chance of qualification.
The ICC recently decided to grant ODI status to five additional countries as per 1st May 2022. In addition to the Netherlands, these countries are the United States, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, and Scotland. By playing matches against other countries with ODI status, the Netherlands ladies’ team can move upwards in the world rankings and enforce direct qualification for World Cup events in the future.
Certain stipulations are part of the ODI status. Participating countries must have a 40-over women’s league and they must play at least eight one-day matches before the World Cup Qualifier (early 2025). The first three of these ODIs are already planned: the Netherlands will play against Ireland at VRA - Amstelveen and VCC - Voorburg on 22, 24 and 26 August 2022.
