- Preview U19 Cricket World Cup Europe Qualifier - Division 2
From 24 to 31 July, the Dutch Lions U19 will try to make up for last year's lost ground in Denmark. By finishing as one of the best runners-up, the team can qualify for the Division 1 qualifying tournament that will be hosted next year. The winner of that tournament will then qualify for the U19 World Cup, which will be played in Zimbabwe and Namibia in early 2026.
Last year, the Netherlands had the honour of hosting the Division 1 qualifying tournament. Scotland won the tournament in early August 2023 and qualified for the U19 World Cup in South Africa at the beginning of this year. In addition to two losses against Jersey and Scotland, the Netherlands had the misfortune that two games against the supposed weaker countries Norway and Italy rained out, causing it to miss out on important points. The three bottom countries were relegated, which means that the Netherlands now will have to combat the likes of Norway and Italy.
This will take place in and around Copenhagen. On the fields of Svanholm Cricketklub, Glostrup Cricket Club, Køge Cricket Club and in Albertslund, eight countries in two groups of four will decide who will be allowed to be promoted to one division higher next year. The pool format is as follows:
Poule A Poule B
Nederland België
Frankrijk Denemarken
Isle of Man Italië
Zweden Noorwegen
The Netherlands opens on July 24 in Svanholm against the Isle of Man, and the next day in Køge will be the game against Sweden. Friday July 26 is a rest day, after which the last group match will be played against France on Saturday, again in Køge.
On Sunday, the cross finals will take place (A1-B2 and A2-B1 for place 1 and A3-B4 and A4-B3 for place five), after which another rest day is planned, before the final for the championship will be fought on Tuesday 30 July. In addition, there will also be consolation finals for places 3, 5 and 7.
In Denmark the Netherlands will be led by captain Cedric de Lange (VCC) and with him Tom de Leede, Alejo Nota and Aarav Swaroop of VCC have been selected. HBS provides three players (Joris van Oosterom, Azzam Khan and Elmar Boendermaker), whilst VOC (Roman Harhangi and Aaditt Jain) and HCC (Shirsak Banerjee and Teun Kloppenburg) each provide two players. The squad of fourteen is completed by wicketkeeper Mark Wolfe (ACC), Milan Moolman (ECC) and Sam van Giezen (Hermes DVS). Coaches are Pierce Fletcher and Vivian Kingma, while Luuk Kroesen has been added to the staff as a physiotherapist. We wish our team all the best!
