- Thailand women beat Netherlands in first ODI
The Dutch women's team were unable to beat Thailand in the first One Day International in Chiangmai on Sunday morning. Orange restricted the Thai to 243, but could only manage 134 runs in reply.
Since obtaining the One Day status, countries such as the United States, Scotland and Papua New Guinea have to play one-day matches against each other. The results are kept in the ICC rankings. These are important to determine at a certain point who will go directly to the World Cup and who must qualify first.
In humidly warm Chiangmai, Thailand batted first. The Dutch, who were without Silver Siegers due to a hand injury, celebrated its first success in the fourth over when Frédérique Overdijk caught lefthander Tippoch off her own bowling. Moments later, Hannah Landheer bowled Khoncharoenkar.
The Netherlands could not take advantage of a mid-pitch collision of Chantham and Chaiwai, but one over later Chaiwai became a victim of Caroline de Lange who was effective and economical with 1‑36.
A chance from Nattakan Chantham was dropped, but more importantly, Netherlands captain Heather Siegers seemed to injure herself in the act. Fortunately she could continue.
For the first time in a long time, Robine Rijke, who has worked hard on her bowling action, was involved in the attack. This change was successful as a mistimed lofted drive by Laomi ended up in the hands of Caroline de Lange.
The runrate temporarily dropped to 4.5 per over, but that will not have led to panic in the Thai camp as they still had six wickets in hand. Chantham, who had been dropped at 40 and 90, benefited with a well-made century. It wasn’t until the thirty-fifth over when Sutthiruang (24) played on to Eva Lynch: 167/5.
Gwen Bloemen (0-28) could have seen her excellent bowling crowned with a wicket, but a chance off her bowling was unfortunately dropped. However, the miss was not expensive as Eva Lynch (2-57) dismissed Kanoh one over later: 200/6.
Eventually, centurion Chantham (caught on the boundary by Eva Lynch) fell in the 47th over for 102, followed by a lightning-fast stumping by keeper Babette de Leede who kept wicket over the stumps to the excellent seamer Frédérique Overdijk (3-39). The Dutch team had a number of chances to get Thailand all out, but just failed to do so: 243/9.
Netherlands innings
After a rain delay the target was set at 235 off 46 overs. Babette de Leede and Sterre Kalis, who were so successful against Sri Lanka in December 2021, now set an opening score of 47 in 15.3 overs before left arm spinner Thipatcha Putthawong bowled Kalis (12). Her partner De Leede (top scorer with 33) was inches short attempting a short run a bit later.
After the solid opening stand the Netherlands had to make six runs per over. However, that quickly increased to almost nine per over as rotating the strike proved to be a difficult task on the disciplined Thai attack.
Heather Siegers made a valiant attempt, but had to capitulate on 28 (off 35 balls). The Dutch continued to lose wickets, were all out for 134 and - despite 15 runs from Eva Lynch - did not come close to the target of 235.
Coach Shane Deitz was realistic after the match: “It was a tough game today first up but lots of lessons learnt. We played some good cricket in parts but looked like a team that hadn't played in a few months and we were very rusty. Some basic errors and missed chances cost us but the girls fought hard all day in very hot conditions.”
“We know a bit more about the opposition and pitch and will be better for the experience. They are a good side especially in these conditions which really suit them but we need to improve and keep getting better everyday. The girls are committed and working hard which I am proud of."
The remaining seven matches can be followed via this livestream:
