- VOC ‘grabs last straw’, but misses Championship Week
In the T10 tournament in Cartama, VOC recovered impressively against the American University of Malta (AUM) (153 – 71). Unfortunately the win did not follow up when VOC fought for a place in the final. Against Svanholm it was 131 – 108.
Against AUM, Seelaar (72 off 26) and De Kok (39 off 19) showed their true faces. It was 65/0 after three (!) overs, with this unlikely series: 6 6 6 0 4 6 4 4 4 6 6 0 - a partnership of 112 for the first wicket in 6.5 overs! Poor Jitesh Patel came off the field 0-50 in two overs. Jelte Schoonheim made 38 not out in 12 balls; VOC 153/2.
When top batsman George was given LBW, the game had actually already been played. Despite Dianish's 35 off 22, AUM didn't get past 71/9. Wonderful bowling figures this time for Schoonheim 2-13, Upadhyaya 2-2 and Siebe van Wingerden 2-3.
Svanholm too strong
In the all-important match that followed, VOC seemed to be heading for the win for a long time. Denmark's Svanholm was 94/1 after eight overs. Abdullah Mahmood, however, had plans with Jelte Schoonheim, who saw the ninth over go for 28 runs. Still 131/4 for the Danes.
Seelaar and De De Kok were unable to repeat their earlier feat. It started well with three consecutive boundaries, but then the Rotterdammers lost six wickets in 21 balls. Despite some resistance from Niaz (27 out of 13) it was game, set and match: 108/8 after ten overs.
Svanholm lost the final to the Farmers. The latter can get ready to participate in Championship Week in the week of March 20.
